All About Deep Dental Cleaning

Deep Dental Cleaning

Here’s What You Need to Know

Is a Deep Cleaning Really Necessary?

Sometimes referred to as “deep cleaning,” scaling and root planing is an in-depth form of dental hygiene meant to treat periodontal disease. Traditional cleanings remove plaque and debris from all of the tooth surfaces that show above the gum line. Scaling and root planing involve cleaning below the gumline to remove plaque that has formed between the gums and the roots of the teeth. This removes the source of the infection leading to healthier teeth and gums.

What is Gum Disease?

Everyone has populations of helpful bacteria living in their mouths. These bacteria are an important aspect of your overall health and even aid in digestion! However, sometimes harmful bacteria can make their home underneath your gum line, where it’s hard for you to reach to clean. This infection causes inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissues and is known as periodontal disease. This swelling means that the gums pull away from the teeth and surrounding bone, causing loss of bone and healthy tissue.

While some people are genetically predisposed to periodontal disease, there are many factors that can further increase your risk of developing periodontal issues. Other factors that can increase your risk include tobacco use (whether smoking, chewing, or vaping), diet, certain diseases such as diabetes, stress, or lack of adequate home care.

How Do I Know if I Need a Scaling and Root Planing?

While only a dental professional can diagnose you after an exam, there are some signs that may indicate you need scaling and root planing treatment.  Unlike other diseases or infections, periodontal disease is usually largely pain-free until it is quite advanced, so it is not a good indicator.

If your gums bleed easily when brushing or flossing, appear red in color, or are swollen, it’s best to schedule an appointment with your dentist so you can receive a proper diagnosis and begin treatment. This will prevent your gum disease from worsening, which can lead to bone and tooth loss over time, and will help you to have a happy and healthy smile!
