All About Dental X-Rays
Here’s What You Need to Know:
Why Do I Need X-Rays?
Sometimes it may feel as if you are getting too many dental x-rays. You may also wonder if it is safe. We assure you here at BRAIDC the dental x-rays you are exposed to are a necessary part of preventive dental care and yes they are safe. As Dr. Lee likes to say, trying to plan and provide dental treatment without X-rays is like trying to drive blindfolded. Dental X-rays, also known as radiographs, allow us to see aspects of your health that may not be visible to the naked eye. Radiographs help us to determine the next step in your dental treatment and preventative care.
What Do X-Rays Show?
Dental X-rays can aid us in diagnosing underlying issues, such as:
- Gum disease, the condition of the bone surrounding your teeth
- Developing teeth (in the case of children)
- Possible cysts and tumors
- Locate infections
- Examine the roots of the teeth
How often do I need X-Rays?
Dentists will begin with a full mouth series of X-rays (known as an FMX) or a panoramic X-ray to start. This allows us to assess your current condition and is used as a baseline to detect any changes in your condition. FMXs and panoramic X-rays are updated every five years.
Bitewing x-rays will be taken every one to two years to and it used to diagnose cavities or gum disease that form between the back teeth.
Are x-rays safe?
Yes! We always take proper precautions to ensure your safety, dental X-rays are perfectly safe. We always utilize lead aprons complete with thyroid collars to further prevent exposure. With modern technology such as digital sensors which decrease exposure time, X-rays are safer than ever before. In fact, the dosage of radiation received during a single dental X-ray is the same amount of radiation you get from eating two bananas!
At BRAIDC, your safety and health are our top priority.
